TOPONYMY
“Siliau” is originally a Chinese phrase, comprising of the word “si” (“die” in English) and “liau” (“all gone” in English). The rising demand for tin ore in the middle of the 18th century forced the Chinese miners to look for new mining areas. They went to Kampung Pengkalan, a village along the Linggi River which was then the settlement of the Malay and the indigenous people. The Chinese miners, who called themselves as “cempiyang”, later began to rob the villagers, particularly at nights. Unhappy with this, three Malay warriours decided to get rid of the Chinese miners. So one day, while the Chinese miners were busy mining, the three Malay warriors sneaked into the Chinese miners’ house and hid in the attic. On the same night, they got down from the attic and killed all the Chinese miners. Since the incident, the place has been known as “Siliau” (“all dead”) – so significant that the name Kampung Pengakalan is no longer used by anyone (Mohd. Jamilo Jamil, 9th September, 2013)
TOPONOMI
Jamilo Jamil, 9th September, 2013).
