TOPONYMY
Around 150 years ago, Marang was a fishing village with the majority of its population working as fishermen. Due to the fact that the village of Marang, which is located at the estuary of Marang River and near the island of Pulau Kapas, is a meeting point for fishermen, there were a lot of fish wastes around the river. Some of the animals which inhibited the Marang River area were otters or ‘memerang’ in Malay, and it is said that the otters or ‘memerang’ were feeding on the fish wastes. This is how, according to some stories, the town of Marang got its name, i.e. from the word ‘memerang’.      There are also other stories about the origin of the town’s name. One of these is a story which says that the origin of the name “Marang” is attributed to a well-known Chinese entrepreneur of dried sea products including fish and squid. He lived at the estuary of Marang River and was known by the name Ma.  It is said that his house  was full of racks known by the locals as ‘rang’ on which sea products were dried. The place became famous with ‘Ma’s rangs’ and was eventually called Marang.

TOPONOMI
