TOPONYMY
Kampung Imam Lapar literally means ‘the village of the hungry imam’.  According to old stories, two merchants were travelling in a boat from Kuala Sungai Telemong bringing with them goods to be sold to villagers living along ther river. At one point, they reached a village which did not have a name. As they were both very hungry, they headed to the local mosque and found the imam busy trying to memorise verses from the holy Qur’an. Although they tried to inform the imam that they were hungry and wanted some food, the imam was too ingrossed in memorising the Qur’an and did not realise that there were two man trying to seek his help. The duo then stopped at another jetty and headed to the local mosque without realising that it is the same mosques they stopped at earlier. The imam was still reciting the Qur’an, and they left the mosque. It might be that the merchants recounted their story to others saying that they tried to tell the imam that they were ‘lapar’ (‘hungry’ in Malay) but the imam continued to ‘laper’ (‘memorise’ in the old dialect used in the area ) the Qur’an. It is said that due to the fact that ‘lapar’ and ‘leper’ are pronounced almost identically what was supposed to be ‘imam leper’ (memorising imam) became ‘imam lapar’ (the hungry imam).

TOPONOMI
