TOPONYMY
There are several stories on the origin of the name ‘Terengganu”. One story has it that in ancient times, before the place was named Terengganu, a group of hunters from Pahang were hunting in the area of what is now southern Terengganu. One of the hunters spotted a big animal fang lying on the ground. A fellow party member asked to which animal did the fang belong. The hunter, not knowing which animal, simply answered taring anu (Malay: 'fang of something'). On a different occasion, some of the hunters managed to catch a deer. When they returned with the catch to their camp, they were asked where they had caught the deer. The hunters replied, from the land of taring anu. Similarly, on a different occasion when the hunters returned from hunting and brought with them sandalwood, the people asked them where did they get the goods from, to which they replied, from the banks of the river in the land of taringanu, which later evolved to Terengganu. Another story attributes the names origin to “Terang-nya-ganu” (Malay: bright rainbow). According to this story, several travelers from Kelantan travelled to what is known today as Kuala Terengganu and saw a very bright rainbow in the sky. When they returned to Kelantan they described to the people the rainbow they saw in the neighboring state saying terang ganunya (Malay: so bright is its rainbow). Eventually, the place was known as Terengganu.

TOPONOMI
Terdapat beberap cerita tentang asal-ususl nama ‘Terengganu’.
