BATU KAWAN, PULAU PINANG

LOCATION
Batu Kawan is an island and town in Penang, Malaysia. The island is situated on a large estate in Penang, Seberang Perai. One end of the Second Penang Bridge is Batu Kawan. Batu Kawan Stadium (stadium Penang) is also located here (Yeng Ai Chun, 2006).

LOKASI
Batu Kawan ialah sebuah pulau dan pekan di kawasan Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Pulau ini terletak di sebuah tanah besar di Pulau Pinang, iaitu Seberang Perai. Batu Kawan merupakan satu daripada penghujung Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang. Stadium Batu Kawan (stadium negeri Pulau Pinang) juga terletak di sini (Yeng Ai Chun, 2006).

NAME OF PLACE
Batu Kawan is known to be a small island in Penang, which is the first stop before Captain Francis Light made his way to Jerjak  Island and then to Penang. Batu Kawan is among the oldest of the cities in Penang. Batu Kawan is an island rich in history since the British colonial era. There is evidence and facts to show human settlement in the area of ​​Batu Kawan including Perai area began as early as 1700. Batu Kawan was then known as 'Batucawan' (Amir Bin Haji Mohamad, 2008).

NAMA TEMPAT
Batu Kawan dipercayai merupakan sebuah pulau kecil di Pulau Pinang, yang menjadi persinggahan pertama Kapten Francis Light sebelum beliau ke Pulau Jerjak dan selepas itu ke Pulau Pinang. Batu Kawan merupakan antara bandar awal yang tertua di Pulau Pinang. Batu Kawan merupakan sebuah pulau yang kaya dengan sejarahnya yang terkubur sejak zaman penjajahan British lagi. Terdapat bukti serta fakta yang menunjukkan bahawa penempatan manusia di kawasan Batu Kawan termasuk di Kawasan Prai telah bermula seawal tahun 1700 lagi. Batu Kawan pada ketika itu dikenali sebagai 'Batucawan' (Amir Bin Haji Mohamad, 2008).

ATTRACTIONS
Bukit Batu Kawan is believed to have a variety of hidden history. Other than the “ thousand stairs to the top of the hill”, in Batu Kawan there are also places like  "The Minister's House," which were inhabited by British officers, horse track used by British officers, the church, and also the graves of English. There is also a location on the hill that often gives out fragrant aroma until today, which is believed to have originated from plants and herbs. This are is called Taman Batu Kawan Perfume by the local.

Batu Kawan was once inhabited by 20 Communists who had settled in the surrounding hills around the year 1952 in a cave called Gua Communists. They often came down to the village to ask for food and one of them killed a village chief at the time.

Few of the Batu Kawan locals know of the existence of a “Thousand Steps”, built in Bukit Batu Kawan. Ladder is built up to the top of the hill and back down to the foot of the hill in reverse. The ladder is believed to be built by a rich quarry owner around 200 years ago. A settlement has existed on the hill which was at the height of 776 feet above sea level. The “Thousand Steps” were built for the residents of the village. Now the ladder is covered with soil and only part of the staircase can be seen where it ends near Batu Musang Jetty. There used to be a waterfall at the top of the hill which is now dry since palm oil plantation began.

There is a beach located next to the Batu Musang Jetty.  This beach is named Club Beach for British Citizens often relax on the beach at night. There used to be a club house on the beach at the time. Local residents have replaced the name of the Beach Club to Batu Musang Beach.

Surrounding the farms in Batu Kawan, there were granite sites which at one time was installed with a special tool to use cattle to grind cane. Although the grinder is lost, the site can still be seen in the village (Amir Bin Haji Mohamad, 2008).


TARIKAN

Bukit Batu Kawan dipercayai mempunyai pelbagai sejarah yang tersembunyi. Selain daripada tangga seribu ke puncak bukit, di Batu Kawan juga terdapat “ The Minister’s House ” yang di diami oleh pegawai British, laluan kuda yang digunakan oleh pegawai British, Gereja dan juga kubur orang Inggeris. Terdapat juga sebuah lokasi di bukit tersebut yang sering mengeluarkan aroma yang cukup wangi sehingga sekarang dipercayai berasal  daripada tanaman herba. Kawasan tersebut dinamakan Taman Wangi oleh penduduk Batu Kawan.

Batu Kawan pernah di diami 20 orang Komunis yang pernah menetap di puncak bukit tersebut sekitar tahun 1952 di dalam sebuah Gua yang dinamakan Gua Komunis. Mereka dikatakan sering turun ke Kampung untuk meminta makanan dan pernah membunuh seorang Penghulu pada ketika itu.

Segelintir penduduk tempatan Batu Kawan mengetahui mengenai kewujudan Tangga Seribu yang dibina di Bukit Batu Kawan. Tangga tersebut dibina ke puncak bukit tersebut dan turun semula ke kaki bukit di sebaliknya. Tangga tersebut dipercayai dibina oleh pemilik kuari yang kaya sekitar 200 tahun dahulu. Sebuah perkampungan pernah wujud di puncak bukit tersebut yang berada pada paras ketinggian 776 kaki dari paras laut. Tangga seribu ini dibina untuk penduduk perkampungan tersebut. Kini tangga tersebut ditimbus tanah dan hanya sebahagian daripada tangga dapat dilihat dimana ia berakhir berdekatan dengan Jetty Batu Musang. Terdapat sebuah air terjun di puncak bukit tersebut yang kini sudah kering sejak penanaman kelapa dilakukan.

Terdapat sebuah pantai bersebelahan dengan Jetty Batu Musang. Pantai ini dinamakan Club Beach kerana Warga British sering beristirehat di pantai tersebut pada waktu malam. Terdapat sebuah rumah kelab di pantai tersebut pada ketika itu. Penduduk tempatan telah menggantikan nama Club Beach kepada Pantai Batu Musang.

Di sekeiling Ladang Batu Kawan, terdapat tapak granit yang pada satu ketika dipasang alat khas untuk menggunakan lembu bagi mengkisar tebu. Walaupun pengkisar tersebut sudah hilang, tapak tersebut masih dapat dilihat di perkampungan tersebut (Amir Bin Haji Mohamad, 2008).
