TANJUNG RIMAU, MELAKA (tand͡ʒoŋ rimaʊ)

LOKASI
(Melaka Blogger, 2012).

LOCATION
Tanjung Rimau is located approximately in the middle of the main route (M61) between Alor Gajah in Melaka (9.9km south) and Tampin in Negeri Sembilan (8.2km). There are two areas within Tanjung Rimau – Kampung Tanjung Rimau Dalam and Kampung Tanjung Rimau Luar. It is not known how this “internal” (Malay “Dalam”) and “external” (Malay “Luar”) division was done; however, those residing in Kampung Tanjung Rimau Dalam would often refer Kampung Tanjung Rimau Luar as “seberang” (English: “across”) and vice-versa. There is a possibility that “across” refers to “across the Melaka River upstream” that flows through the village. Hence, the area that is closer to the bigger town, is referred to as “Tanjung Rimau Luar because the location is more “outward” compared to the more “inward” part of the kampung, hence the name “Kampung Tanjung Rimau Dalam” for the latter. The tallest hill is Bukit Merchat, and this hill is located in Kampung Tanjung Rimau Luar.

TOPONOMI

TOPONYMY
According to Melaka Blogger (2012), there are two versions on how Tanjung Rimau got its name. These versions have been passed from one generation to another.

  1. The first version is related to the story of a weretiger that was believed to exist in the village. The pioneers of the village claimed that the weretiger would often appear when the villagers experienced hardship such as robbery, enemy threat etc. The weretiger would help the villagers overcome their problem. However, it is not known how the weretiger helped the villagers.
  2. The second version is related to a group of royalties. The group, which was lead by Panglima Hitam, had ran through the river (presumeably the Melaka River upstream), and had taken a break at a promontory. It was reported that as soon as Panglima Hitam mounted the promontory from the river below, he was shocked to see a one-eyed tiger there, sitting on an anthill. Panglima Hitam quickly ordered his people to distance themselves away from the tiger. Later when he had taken his rest, Panglima Hitam realised that he was attracted to the promontory; he found that the promontory was very suitable for settlement and good for agricultural activities. Hence, Panglima Hitam decided to reside there and thus, named the place “Tanjung Harimau”. Through morphological process called clipping, the word harimau, over the years, has now become “rimau”, and the village is now known as “Tanjung Rimau”.
