TOPONOMI

TOPONYMY
It was believed that the name of this place is closely related to the parents of Hang Tuah, the Malay lengendary warrior of the 15th century. His mother (Tun Lela Wati) and father (Tun Mahmud) from Bukit Siguntang, Palembang, had to retreat to Melaka, following the Majapahit Empire’s attack. They changed their names to Hang Mahmud and Dang Merduwati, as cited in the famous ‘Hikayat Hang Tuah’. On their way to Melaka, Hang Mahmud and his followers stayed on an island named Pulau Besar, Melaka for 40 days before moving to an area close to a river called Sungai Temu (now known as “Padang Temu”). While resting at the mouth of the river, they sighted a fish that resembled a mermaid. This unusual sighting made Hang Mahmud name the village “Kampung Duyong” and hence, decided to reside there. It was then the place where Hang Tuah, was born, as mentioned in ‘Hikayat Hang Tuah’ (Radzi Sapiee, 2012; Kampung Duyong, 2007).
