TOPONOMI

TOPONYMY
Once upon a time, according to stories from oral traditions, when Kelantan was ruled over by the Siamese, the King of Siam desired to go to Kuala Krai from Kota Bharu on an elephant. He wished to bring with him all assortments of merchandise including pineapples (also known as lanas or nanas in Malay). As they stopped in an unknown area, one of the pineapples fell from the ‘kok’ which had been placed atop the elephant. The expedition had to come to a halt in order to collect the fallen pineapple and return it to the ‘kok’. However, each time they placed it back upon the ‘kok’, it continued to fall back to the ground. Finally, the King of Siam asked about the constant halt to their progress. The crew immediately chorused in reply: ‘Kok lanas!’ (Abd Aziz Ali, 2014)
