TOPONYMY
Ampang was historically a tin mining town during the British colonization and post-independence. Its history is closely related to the history of Kuala Lumpur. In 1857, Raja Abdullah, a representative of the Selangor Sultanate, opened up the Klang Valley for tin prospectors. 87 Chinese prospectors went up the Klang River and began prospecting in the Ampang area, which was then covered with jungle. Despite 69 of them dying due to the pestilential conditions, a thriving tin mine was established.  A dam was built from Bukit Belacan to the Ampang city area for tin mining works. The word ‘Ampang’ derives from the word ‘Empangan’, which means dam that the Chinese prospectors mispronounced as ‘Ampangan’.

TOPONOMI
