TOPONYMY
The word ‘kuala’ means estuary while ‘lumpur’ means muddy. Therefore Kuala Lumpur literally means the muddy estuary. In the 1850s tin miners arrived at the confluence of two rivers: Sungai Gombak and Sungai Klang to open tin mines, which later expanded to become a town. Since Sungai Gombak was known at the time as Sungai Lumpur (muddy river), the estuary of the two rivers was named after Sungai Lumpur. This is because in Malay thee meeting point of two rivers or an estuary is named after the smaller river. Today, the ‘muddy estuary’ can be seen in the middle of the city, at the location of the Jamek mosque

TOPONOMI
